Aspenvale Cemetery was the first cemetery to be declared a Virginia Historic Landmark. Not only is the Revolutionary hero, Gen. William Campbell, famous for the Battle of King’s Mountain, buried here, but also his wife, Elizabeth Henry Campbell Russell, known as “Madam Russell” and sister to Patrick Henry. After Gen. Campbell’s death Elizabeth married another important Revolutionar general, William Russell. She was a leader in the Methodist movement in the late 1700’s and often had Bishop Francis Asbury as her house guest when he made his bi-annual visits to the area. Gen. Francis Preston, husband of Campbell’s daughter Sarah, is also buried here. Preston and his wife operated the Saltworks in Saltville, Virginia, later living in Abingdon. Their home served as a girls school and is now the Martha Washington Inn.
