Big Otter Mill is situated on the banks of the Big Otter River, a few miles north of the Town of Bedford, Virginia on Route 122 North.  The site of Big Otter Mill has been used for grist and sawmills for more than two hundred years.  Big Otter Mill was first built and operated by Joseph Hardy, Sr., a veteran of the Revolutionary War, who settled in Bedford County in the late 1700s.  Big Otter Mill became operational in the 18th century.

Big Otter Mill is a member of the National Register of Historic Landmarks, and has the potential to become a culture heritage catalyst that educates thousands of people about Virginia history and culture once Big Otter Mill is fully restored. 

Tours of Big Otter Mill are by appointment only, two weeks in advance.
