More About Grindstone Campground

With funding from the Great American Outdoors Act, we are working to decommission and replace the wastewater system at Grindstone Campground on the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The old wastewater system is no longer working and is too old to repair. This project will take several years to plan and complete and is necessary to protect the water quality of Big Laurel Creek, a native trout stream. We expect camping options here to be limited over the next several years during the design, decommissioning, and construction process. For the 2023 summer recreation season, only Opossum Loop will be open with 20 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Camping is also available within 20 miles of this site at Hurricane Campground, Beartree Recreation Area and Racoon Branch Campground.

Within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, this high-elevation campground provides cool shaded summer camping. 90 single and 7 double sites plus tables, flush toilets, showers and electric and water hookups. The Campground also has a water play area, trails, trout fishing in nearby creeks and an amphitheater with weekend programs.
