MacCallum More, Scottish for Home of the Clan, was begun in 1929 by Lucy M. Hudgins, wife of Edward W. Hudgins, former Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Listed on the Virginia Landmark Registry and the National Historic Register.
The gardens feature an arboretum, herb, wildflower, rose and theme gardens, as well as, fountains and eclectic imported works of art.
The museum houses permanent exhibits: The Arthur Robertson Exhibit contains Indian artifacts dated 9500BC-1600AD; The Thyne Institute Exhibit tells the story of an African-American boarding school est. in 1876; & Chase City interests such as The Mecklenburg Hotel Exhibit containing memorabilia from the hotel built in 1903 famous for its curative waters. A exhibit details the founding of Estes Express Lines in Chase City in the 1930’s and follows its growth to the present day. Portraits of George and Narcissa Endly, co-founders of Chase City, hang in the Foyer. The museum showcases revolving art displays of varied mediums.
Office/Gift Shop and Chase City Visitor Center open to the public at no charge.
