This is the original site of Randolph-Macon College, built in the 1830’s in Boydton, Virginia. Efforts are currently underway to protect and preserve the site.
A little-known fact about this site is that the college was not built on virgin ground – it was actually built over a horse racetrack. This racetrack was significant as it was the first documented oval horsetrack in the United States, dating back to the late 1700’s when Alexander Boyd founded the nearby historic site of Boydton, Virginia.
