The TransAmerica Bicycle Trail starts in Astoria, OR and ends in Yorktown, VA. It’s 4218 miles was developed and mapped by Adventure Cycling Association, along rural two-lane highways, to celebrate the country’s bi-centennial in 1976.
The Heart of Appalachia segment of the route begins just west of Virginia in Berea, Kentucky and leads though the heart of the Appalachian Mountains to Breaks Interstate Park.
From Breaks, you’ll ascend and descend the Appalachians, along Interstate 80, the two-lane ribbon through Dickenson and Russell Counties. You’ll wind your way through lush landscapes, charming small towns of Haysi, Honaker, Lebanon, Rosedale and Elk Garden. Plan a stop at the Biker’s Hostel in Rosedale for a true Appalachian hospitality experience. Breaks to Elk Garden is about a 63.5 mile trek.
Not ready to leave our treasured Appalachian Mountains? South of Honaker, the TransAmerica Trail intersects with Virginia’s only state recognized bicycle trail, the Heart of Appalachia Bike Trail running from Burke’s Garden/Tazewell to Guest River Gorge/Wise County. The 128 mile ride with 40 miles side trails covers backroads, rails to trails, single track, historic sites, a nature preserve, wilderness area, a swinging bridge, three scenic rivers, farms, coal country, and gorgeous views the counties of Tazewell, Bland, Russell, and Wise.
