From Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground take a half hour drive north up 1-77 toward Wytheville to spend the day at three Virginia State Parks. Start at the historical Shot Tower where you can learn a bit about early ammunition manufacturing and commerce in southwest Virginia. While there, take in a view of the New River. Follow the signs from Shot Tower to find Foster Falls. Foster Falls is a park next to an extended set of rapids that flow under limestone cliffs. There are ample picnic areas to enjoy lunch riverside. In season, you can rent a kayak or canoe. There is also a horse livery for anyone who wants to go horseback riding. Running right next to Foster Falls is a section of the New River State Park. The linear park is flat and an easy walk. The views of the river, mountains and surrounding farm lands are breathtaking. If you have time, stop in at nearby Fort Chiswell Animal Park or make an appointment to visit near by Cobb Hill Alpacas. At the end of the day, head back to Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground for a relax evening around the fire.
