More About Montgomery Museum of Art & History

The Montgomery Museum of Art and History was founded in 1983 for the purpose of preserving history and presenting art representative of Montgomery County (population of 98,666), the New River Valley, and more broadly, Appalachian Virginia. The Museum carries out this mission by providing research materials (over 16,000 items in archives and historic photographs), developing history exhibitions from our over 4,000 artifacts, exhibiting the work of regional artists, providing educational materials for students, providing a garden of native and pollinator plants and outdoor art displays, and engaging the community in various classes, programs, and events.

Formerly housed in a historic manse (c.1854) on a quiet street, with only about 2,600 square feet, the Museum seized a rare opportunity in 2021 and bought a historic bank building. It is now located on Town Square within the Christiansburg Downtown National Register Historic District.
