Tazewell County is historically known for it’s deep connection to the coal industry, however, as you cross Walker Mountain the only thing you can focus on is Tazewell’s beautiful scenic views. White-tailed deer and wild turkey run free through the woodlands while bald eagles soar through the sky. Be sure to stop by Burke’s Garden on your way through the area, the garden lies in a massive bowl that is thought was once a large limestone cap that collapsed. The region refers to the area as “God’s Thumbprint” and it is some of the most fertile land in the state of Virginia. End your journey by stopping by the Crab Orchard Museum and get a sense of the area’s cultural history and mountain heritage.
