Founded as a city in 1887, Radford is located just off I-81 between exits #105 and #109, is bordered on three sides by the New River and is home to Radford University.
Radford has contributed to the heritage music scene over the years, and most notably is the home to the Radford Fiddle & Banjo Jam. Created in 2000, the jam has been a gathering place for bluegrass and old-time music for years. A great opportunity for any level musician to gather and showcase their skills, this jam also attracts banjo, mandolin, guitar and upright bass players as well as singers in the old-time traditions.
The annual Radford Highlanders Festival occurs in October, which celebrates the area’s Scots-Irish heritage with bagpipes, heavy weight games and traditional music. Glencoe Mansion highlights key individuals and events that shaped the region and the Mary Draper Ingles statue and supporting sites help tell the story of the Wilderness Road and western migration.
